Intent – What do we want children to learn?

To create successful mathematicians who:

  • Love maths enthusiastically.
  • Challenge themselves appropriately.
  • Use vocabulary and signs correctly.
  • Solve REAL problems logically.
  • Give reasons clearly.
  • Explore numbers and patterns precisely.
  • Calculate efficiently.
  • Measure accurately.
  • Investigate geometry thoughtfully.
  • Study statistics inquisitively.
  • Link ideas creatively.
  • Learn independently and collaboratively.

Implementation – How are we going to achieve our intent?

  • To ensure full topic coverage, the school uses the NTS Maths map so that what we are teaching is assessed at the end of term. This is enhanced with resources from White Rose, Hamilton and Primary Stars
  • Maths lessons include fluency, reasoning and problem solving.
  • Lessons are adapted to ensure there is appropriate challenge for all learners.
  • All children, whatever their ability, are encouraged to understand a concept through equipment, pictures and through their own writing.
  • Children are individually assessed and rewarded for rapid recall of key calculation facts.
  • Children are assessed on a termly basis.

Impact – What will it look like when we have achieved our intent?

The number of children who feel more positive about maths is increasing.

In both schools, the number of children who are at age-related expectations is around 70% apart from Y5 in both schools and Y3 in Waldringfield. Children who are not reaching age-related expectations are being/will be targeted with an individualised assess, teach, practise system to ensure they can:

  • confidently calculate with 1-digit numbers
  • progress through the sequence of learning for each area of calculation
  • have other gaps analysed through the NTS tests.

For those who are at age-related expectations or above, they are being increasingly challenged through reasoning and problem-solving tasks
